The Clean Beauty Dossier: Niacinamide

Skintellect's Clean Beauty Dossier is a series where we highlight our favorite good-for-you, non-toxic beauty ingredients that promote healthy, glowing skin. Each edit features a list of coveted products: face, body, and gut, that we have recommended for you.

WHAT EXACTLY IS NIACINAMIDE?

Niacinamide is one of the two major forms of vitamins B3 which helps to repair the skin. How so? Based on scientific theory, niacin is the parent compound to two very important molecules (NAD+ / NADP+) that are central to the chemical reactions that your cells ultimately need to function and repair damage.

WHAT ARE THE SKIN BENEFITS?

Because of its damage repair benefits, when applied topically, niacinamide is proven to increase the reproduction of ceramides (lipids that help the skin retain moisture), and therefore effectively helps with the skin's moisture barrier, treating acne prone skin, and repairing of fine lines. It is also important to note that since niacinamide is nonirritating and super soothing, it can be combined with other ingredients such as vitamin c and retinoid.
