“Wash your hands for 20 seconds.” If you’ve been following the CDC guidelines to prevent the spread of Covid-19 (and I hope you have) I’m pretty sure your life has been filled with frequent hand washing and lots of hand sanitizer. All things good for preventing the spread during a pandemic, but not so good for our hands as harsh soaps and alcohol based sanitizers are very drying and cause our hands to lose its much needed moisture.
It’s so easy to forget that like our face, our hands call for specific skincare as well. As a hand model, I care for my hands more than the average person but truthfully, it’s something we all should begin to do. Our hands are actually one of the first places that show our age and it deserves just as much care and thought as we put into our facial skincare. Keep reading for my top 3 suggestions for caring for your hands.
1. Hand cream with SPF. For daytime use, I would invest in a hand cream that has SPF like Supergoop! Handscreen with SPF 40. I’m all about 2 in 1 products. Reapply as needed, especially after you wash your hands or apply hand sanitizer.
2. Hand cream for nighttime use. I like to use a heavier cream for night. You can use your regular body cream for your hands as well. Massage your hands with the cream to make sure your hands are well moisturized. Choose a cream that is very natural with minimal ingredients. I’m a fan of Shea Radiance whipped Shea butter , blended with oatmeal and rice bran, because it is moisturizing yet light.
3. Use rubber gloves daily. If you don't already have some for when you're washing dished, buy some! They will change your life. Quarantine has us cooking and washing dishes non-stop and dish washing liquid is not your hand’s best friend as it's typically too harsh and drying for your skin. Please wear gloves every time you wash dishes. Your hands will thank you.
Your hands are just as important as your face and deserve love and attention too. The more moisturized they are, the better!
